Arsenic, Urine with Reflex to Fractionated
Also known as: ARS U
Use
This test is used for the assessment of acute or chronic arsenic exposure. It differentiates between toxic inorganic and methylated species as well as benign organic forms. Results are reported as total inorganic, total methylated, and organic arsenic. The test includes reflex fractionation to determine different arsenic species if total arsenic levels are elevated, which aids in understanding the exposure type.
Special Instructions
Patients should discontinue nutritional supplements, vitamins, and avoid shellfish, seafood, and high-iodine substances for 48 to 72 hours prior to sample collection. Urine should not be collected within 72 hours of contrast media exposure.
Limitations
Elevated arsenic results may arise from contamination during collection using non-trace element-free containers. Elevated results should be confirmed with a second specimen collected in a trace element-free container. Kidneys in patients with impaired function can influence test results if contrast media was administered up to 14 days before collection.
