Blastomyces dermatitidis Antibodies by Immunodiffusion, Serum
Also known as: BLASTO PPT
Use
The test is used to detect antibodies against Blastomyces dermatitidis in patient's serum using the immunodiffusion method. A positive result may indicate a recent or active infection. It is not recommended to be used as a standalone test; for comprehensive serologic testing, the Blastomyces dermatitidis Antibodies by Immunoassay with Reflex to Immunodiffusion, Serum (3000236) is suggested. For diagnosis of blastomycosis, this test should be considered in conjunction with histology or culture.
Special Instructions
This immunodiffusion test specifically detects total antibodies to the 'A' antigen of Blastomyces dermatitidis. The test is performed from Sunday to Saturday, with a reported time of 3-6 days. It is New York state approved and the test code is 0050172. Ensure the serum is separated from cells ASAP, or within 2 hours of collection.
Limitations
This test is not intended to serve as a standalone diagnostic tool for Blastomyces and should not be solely relied upon to diagnose Blastomycosis. A negative result does not exclude the possibility of Blastomyces infection as the test only detects antibodies to the 'A' antigen and may miss antibodies to other antigens. Additionally, false positives or cross-reactivity may occur, and the test's sensitivity and specificity are not disclosed. Clinicians should interpret results in conjunction with clinical assessment and other diagnostic information.
