Desmin by Immunohistochemistry
Also known as: DESMIN IHC
Use
This immunohistochemical stain for desmin is performed as a technical stain-and-return service aiding in the identification of muscle lineage in tissue or cell samples. It is typically used to detect desmin expression in tumor diagnostic workups, particularly for identification of skeletal or smooth muscle differentiation.
Special Instructions
Ordering is performed via electronic request; if electronic ordering is unavailable, use the ARUP Immunohistochemistry Stain Form (#32978) with an ARUP client number. The test is New York state approved. This is used as a technical (stain-and-return) procedure only.
Limitations
Specimens must be representative tissue or cells; depleted or non‑representative specimens are unacceptable. Slides must be 3–5 micron, positively charged (min: 2 slides); do not oven bake precut slides. Tissue must be formalin‑fixed (10% neutral buffered formalin) and paraffin embedded; cells must be processed into a cell block. The test is not acceptable on frozen specimens; specimens must be blocks or unstained slides. Frozen sample submission is unacceptable.
