Hepatitis Delta Virus (HDV), IgM Antibody, EIA
Also known as: HEP D IGM
Use
The Hepatitis Delta Virus (HDV), IgM Antibody, EIA test is utilized to detect HDV IgM antibodies, which suggest either a recent or acute infection, or a chronic infection with persistence of IgM antibodies. This test is specifically used when HDV infection is suspected in patients already infected with the Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), as HDV cannot occur independently of HBV. The detection of HDV IgM plays a crucial role in diagnosing and staging HDV infection alongside other tests such as HDV RNA PCR.
Special Instructions
This test is performed by Quest Diagnostics Nichols Institute and is not available through ARUP Laboratories. It is not recommended for routine screening, diagnosis, or monitoring of Hepatitis Delta Virus. Preferred tests include Hepatitis Delta Virus Antibody or Hepatitis Delta Virus Antibody by ELISA with reflex to HDV by Quantitative PCR.
Limitations
This test has not been cleared or approved by the FDA, although it is validated under CLIA regulations for clinical application. Its use is purely diagnostic and should be part of a comprehensive testing protocol that includes HBV status assessment. The presence of HDV IgM antibodies may not definitively differentiate between acute and chronic infection phases, and additional evaluation via HDV RNA PCR is recommended for a thorough assessment.
