Protein, Total, Urine
Also known as: UTP
Use
The Protein, Total, Urine test is designed to measure the protein concentrations in urine over a specified collection period. It is useful for diagnosing and monitoring kidney conditions, such as glomerulonephritis and preeclampsia, by evaluating renal function through protein loss in urine.
Special Instructions
Patients should refrigerate samples during collection. The test is approved for use in New York state. Collection should be done for 24-hour urine with no additive, and specimens preserved with acid are unacceptable.
Limitations
The quantitative spectrophotometry method used in this test can underestimate urinary light chains, which may affect result interpretation in cases of significant proteinuria or monoclonal gammopathy.
