Special Stain, Alcian Blue - Periodic Acid-Schiff (PAB)
Also known as: PAB SS
Use
Histochemical stain combining Alcian Blue and Periodic Acid–Schiff (PAB), used to identify mucins and glycoproteins in tissue specimens. This stain is provided via ARUP’s stain-and-return technical service, enabling pathologists to visualize acid mucins (blue) and neutral mucins/glycogen (magenta) in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues for diagnostic histopathology.
Special Instructions
Anatomic Pathology Test Request Form (ARUP form #32960) is recommended. Submit via electronic request when possible; if not, use the physical form with ARUP client number. This test is a technical stain-and-return service only; slides or blocks are stained and returned to submitting client.
Limitations
Specimens must contain representative tissue and must not be depleted. Frozen specimens are unacceptable. Slides and blocks must be protected from excessive heat. Slides should be 3–5 µm thick, positively charged; minimum one slide. Frozen specimens are unacceptable.
