Patient Counseling Extract and Hold
Use
This is a specimen management service enabling providers to hold patient specimens—typically blood or DNA extracts—while awaiting decisions on downstream diagnostic testing. The service preserves extracted analytes so that if further testing is ordered (e.g., genetic sequencing or targeted analysis), there is no need for additional patient sampling, minimizing burden and optimizing clinical workflow.
Special Instructions
This service is intended to be ordered when downstream testing is anticipated but not yet finalized. The specimen is held securely until a subsequent test is selected. Ordering providers should indicate on requisition the intent to “extract and hold” and specify potential downstream testing. Coordination between clinical teams and lab personnel may be required.
Limitations
This service does not include analytical testing—it solely covers extraction and temporary storage of specimens. If downstream testing is not ordered within the hold period, stored material may be discarded. The service does not guarantee specimen viability beyond the stated hold duration, and degradation risk may occur if specimen quality is compromised. Reporting reflects only that extraction and storage occurred—not diagnostic results.
