β2-Microglobulin, Urine
Also known as: Beta-2 Microglobulin, Urine
Use
Evaluate renal disease; monitor certain types of malignancies and AIDS
Special Instructions
The urine sample should be collected by having the patient empty their bladder, drink a large glass of water, and collect a sample within one hour. It is crucial to maintain the pH of the urine between 6 and 8 using 1 mol/L sodium hydroxide as β2-microglobulin is sensitive to acidic conditions.
Limitations
This test has not been validated for the measurement of osmolality of fetal urine, which means results from fetal samples may not be accurate.

Collection Instructions
Patient should empty the bladder, then drink a large glass of water and collect a urine sample within one hour. Significant loss of β2-microglobulin activity may occur in acidic urine (pH ≤6). Urine should always be collected at high diuresis and the pH adjusted to between 6 and 8 with 1 mol/L sodium hydroxide.
Storage Instructions
Refrigerate.
Causes for Rejection
Fetal urine sample received
