Gentamicin, Serum, Peak
Also known as: Garamycin®, Gentak®
Use
This aminoglycoside is used to treat serious infections caused by aerobic gram-negative bacilli (eg, a number of the Enterobacteriaceae, P aeruginosa). These include lower respiratory tract, intra-abdominal, soft tissue, bone or joint, wound, and complicated urinary tract infections; bacteremias; and meningitis (by intrathecal administration).
Special Instructions
Peak levels must be ordered using Test No. 007162. Label tubes clearly as “peak.”
Limitations
Serum or plasma must be accurately timed: after IM injection (45–60 minutes), or post IV infusion (30 minutes after a 30-minute infusion or immediately after a 60-minute infusion). Gel‑barrier tubes are not recommended due to absorption of the drug by the gel, potentially lowering measured levels. Hemolysis or lipemia may interfere.
