Hazelnut (Filbert)
Use
The Hazelnut (Filbert) test is used to measure the level of specific IgE antibodies to hazelnut in a patient's serum. This test aids in the diagnosis of hazelnut allergy, which can cause allergic reactions such as oral allergy syndrome, anaphylaxis, or other allergenic symptoms. The result can help determine if a patient needs to avoid hazelnuts to prevent allergic reactions, thus assisting healthcare providers in managing allergic conditions effectively.
Special Instructions
The test requires a serum specimen collected in a red-top tube or gel-barrier tube. Ensure the correct volume is collected to avoid the need for repeat sampling. The test uses the Thermo Fisher ImmunoCAP methodology, which is a widely recognized assay for allergen-specific IgE antibodies.
Limitations
This test is specific for IgE antibodies to hazelnut allergens. It does not provide a complete assessment of a patient’s allergic status. The presence of IgE antibodies indicates sensitization, which may not correlate with clinical allergy symptoms. False positives or negatives may occur, and results should be interpreted alongside clinical history and other diagnostic tests.
