Helicobacter pylori Culture
Also known as: Campylobacter pylori, Campylobacter From Stomach, H pylori Culture, Culture, Helicobacter pylori
Use
Establish the presence and possible etiologic role of Helicobacter pylori in cases of chronic gastric ulcer, gastritis, duodenal ulcer, dyspepsia, etc
Special Instructions
For optimal recovery of Helicobacter pylori, it is strongly recommended that culture be performed within three hours of specimen collection. Helicobacter pylori may also be seen in Gram stains on imprints from tissue biopsies.
Limitations
CPT coding for microbiology and virology procedures often cannot be determined before the culture is performed. Other factors such as pepsin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs), aspirin, ischemia, stress, alcohol, and bile salts, as well as H. pylori, may play a role in altering the mucosal barrier. The relative etiologic role of H. pylori is a subject of speculation, and culture results can vary based on specimen handling and transport conditions.
