Immunofixation (IFE) and Protein Electrophoresis, Random Urine
Also known as: Bence Jones Protein Identification, Random Urine, Globulins, Random Urine, Myeloma Proteins, Random Urine, Urine Immunofixation for Myeloma Proteins
Use
Characterize the species of protein or proteins in cases of proteinuria. Techniques can identify albumin, γ-globulin, γ-globulin fragments (light chains, Bence Jones proteins); of value in the study of monoclonal gammopathies, lymphoproliferative diseases, including lymphoma; special application to multiple myeloma, macroglobulinemia of Waldenström, and amyloidosis; work up monoclonal gammopathy (M-spike)
Special Instructions
Not provided.
Limitations
While the test can identify various proteins, there might be limitations in the ability to fully characterize or quantify all proteins present in urine. Protein electrophoresis and immunofixation are semi-quantitative techniques that might not detect very low concentration proteins. Additionally, sample quality and volume can affect the accuracy of results.
