Protein, Total and Protein Electrophoresis, 24-Hour Urine
Also known as: UPEP, Electrophoresis, Urine
Use
This test analyzes the protein content in 24‑hour urine by separating proteins into major components—albumin, alpha‑1, alpha‑2, beta, and gamma globulins—and interprets elevations, decreases, or patterns, providing information relevant to inflammatory diseases, autoimmune disorders, various types of kidney injury, plasma cell disorders including multiple myeloma, and other cancers. Interpretation may trigger reflex testing if abnormal bands are detected.
Special Instructions
Record total volume on requisition and specimen container. If a monoclonal band is detected, immunofixation electrophoresis is performed at an additional charge. Includes reflex to urine immunofixation (IFE).
Limitations
Reference ranges are provided in the laboratory report. The immunofixation reflex incurs additional charge and is performed only if indicated by detection of monoclonal bands. Interpretations may be limited by improper collection or inadequate specimen volume.
