Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Profile
Also known as: MS Profile
Use
Adjunct in aiding clinical diagnosis of multiple sclerosis
Special Instructions
Collect serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) at the same time. Ensure no contamination of CSF with blood occurs. CSF must be centrifuged at 1500xg for 20 minutes, and the supernatant placed into separate tubes ensuring residual fibrin and cellular matter are removed.
Limitations
The presence of oligoclonal bands solely in the CSF suggests multiple sclerosis but is also associated with other inflammatory brain diseases like subacute encephalitis and neurosyphilis. Increased IgG in the CSF may not be specific for MS and could be indicative of other neural inflammatory conditions. Approximately 2-3% of clinically confirmed MS patients do not show oligoclonal bands initially, but these may develop as the disease progresses. The test results should be clinically correlated for accuracy.
