Oligoclonal Band Profile
Also known as: OLIGO
Use
The Oligoclonal Band Profile is a critical diagnostic tool for assessing multiple sclerosis and other conditions affecting the central nervous system. It involves detecting unique IgG oligoclonal bands in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) when compared to a matched serum specimen. The presence of oligoclonal bands solely in the CSF suggests local IgG production within the CNS, indicative of multiple sclerosis or other neurological disorders such as viral or bacterial meningoencephalitis, neurosyphilis, and Guillain-Barré syndrome. This test also helps distinguish peripheral from central nervous system sources of IgG synthesis.
Special Instructions
For accurate interpretation, both CSF and serum specimens should be collected on the same day. If collected beyond this timeframe, results should be interpreted with caution. The test requires both specimens to be handled together for accurate comparison. Any delays or mishandling could affect the accuracy of the results.
Limitations
This test is limited by its dependence on the simultaneous collection of serum and CSF specimens. Hemolyzed or severely lipemic samples can lead to inaccuracies. While oligoclonal bands are a strong indicator of CNS pathology, they can also appear in other conditions beyond multiple sclerosis, necessitating careful interpretation alongside clinical symptoms.
