Products of Conception (POC) Profile
Also known as: Placental Tissue, Chromosome Analysis and Histology, Products of Conception, Chromosome Analysis and Histology, Spontaneous Abortion, Chromosome Analysis and Histology
Use
This profile is used to rule out chromosome abnormalities as a cause of miscarriage.
Special Instructions
For cytogenetic analysis, a viable nonfixed specimen is required. Cytogenetics will handle viable specimens, and fixed specimens will be forwarded to histology. Additional charges may apply for histopathology procedures as assigned by the pathologist. Moreover, it is important to ensure that samples are not submitted in fixatives to avoid rejection due to incorrect specimen handling.
Limitations
The test has several limitations. Firstly, some products of conception samples may only contain maternal tissue, which could lead to inconclusive results regarding fetal chromosomal abnormalities. It is vital to ensure that an accurate sample is collected. Furthermore, sample viability is crucial for cytogenetic analysis as non-viable tissue could hinder the accurate assessment of chromosomal abnormalities. Additionally, shipping conditions must be controlled to avoid gross contamination and freezing of samples, as these will lead to rejection.

Container
Sterile container with culture media (e.g., HAMS, RPMI), Ringer's lactate or Hank's balanced salt solution
Collection Instructions
Aseptically obtain a small piece of tissue with subepidermal layers. Best results are obtained from placental villi, which remain viable much longer than fetal tissue. If specimen is a product of conception, submit in a sterile tube with culture medium (HAMS, RPMI), Ringer's lactate or Hank's balanced salt solution.
Storage Instructions
Refrigerate. Do not freeze.
Causes for Rejection
Gross contamination; frozen tissue; specimen in fixative
