Acid Phosphatase, Total, Serum
Also known as: ACS
Use
Total acid phosphatase (ACP) activity is useful in assessing conditions such as prostate cancer, Paget disease, hyperparathyroidism with skeletal involvement, and Gaucher disease. These conditions may present with elevated ACP activity, aiding in the evaluation and diagnosis of these disorders.
Special Instructions
The specimen should be allowed to clot completely at room temperature before being transferred to an ARUP standard transport tube. It is crucial that the specimen remains frozen at all times during storage and transport. Separate specimens are necessary when multiple tests are ordered.
Limitations
Plasma and nonfrozen specimens are deemed unacceptable for this test. Additionally, hemolyzed specimens should be avoided as they may compromise the test results. The stability of the serum post-separation is acceptable only when frozen, with room temperature and refrigerated specimens being unacceptable for reliable analysis.
