Allergen, Food, Chestnut
Also known as: CHESTNU
Use
The Allergen, Food, Chestnut test measures the presence of allergen-specific IgE antibodies in the blood for Castanea sativa, also known as European Chestnut or Sweet Chestnut. This test is crucial for diagnosing IgE-mediated allergic reactions to chestnut. The test results help in determining the likelihood of an allergic response upon exposure to this specific allergen. IgE levels, presented in classes ranging from 0 to 6, correlate with the probability and severity of allergic reactions but do not directly measure the clinical response.
Special Instructions
For accurate allergen testing, it is crucial to separate serum from the cells as soon as possible or within two hours of collection, and then transfer the serum to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. Multiple patient encounters should be avoided for effective results.
Limitations
While the test indicates the level of IgE antibodies specific to chestnut, it does not tightly correlate to the clinical response. Low levels of IgE (0.10-0.34 kU/L) have undetermined clinical relevance and should be interpreted by specialists. An IgE response does not replace a clinical history or in vivo reactivity assessment, and negative results do not exclude the possibility of an allergy or anaphylaxis. Additional clinical evaluations and history are necessary for accurate diagnosis.
