Beryllium Lymphocyte Proliferation, Blood
Also known as: BE LYM PRO
Use
Recommended test for identifying beryllium sensitization and chronic beryllium disease (CBD). It is particularly useful for use in asymptomatic individuals who have chronic exposure to beryllium or in symptomatic individuals with a history of beryllium exposure. This test helps in assessing the likelihood of developing chronic beryllium disease by evaluating the lymphocyte proliferation in response to beryllium.
Special Instructions
Specimen must be received at the performing laboratory within 24 hours of collection. The test is performed by a non-ARUP laboratory and requires direct submission to the performing laboratory according to specified instructions. Specimens cannot be sent to ARUP Laboratories for this test.
Limitations
A normal result does not exclude the diagnosis of Chronic Beryllium Disease. If the clinical setting is compatible, a beryllium lymphocyte transformation test using bronchoalveolar lavage lymphocytes is recommended. The test description notes that it was developed and its performance characteristics determined by ADx Laboratories, and it has not been cleared or approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, although FDA has determined that such clearance or approval is not necessary.
