Pokeweed Mitogen (PWM)‑induced Lymphocyte Proliferation
Also known as: Mitogen-induced Cell Proliferation, Lymphocyte Stimulation
Use
Assessment of cellular immune responsiveness via nonspecific mitogen‑induced lymphocyte proliferation; helps evaluate immune competence by measuring proliferation of T and B lymphocytes in response to pokeweed mitogen (PWM) as a stimulatory agent, often in cases of suspected immunodeficiency or broadly suppressed cellular immunity.
Special Instructions
Test is available by prior arrangement only. In Quest Diagnostics’ Mitogen‑and Antigen‑induced Lymphocyte Proliferation Panel (MITOANT), PWM is one of several stimulants included alongside PHA, Con A, Candida, Tetanus, and tuberculin PPD.
Limitations
Whole blood must be transported promptly at room temperature and processed within 48 hours of collection; specimens that are refrigerated, frozen, hemolyzed, clotted, or collected in lithium heparin tubes are unacceptable. Analytical performance characteristics have been determined by Quest Diagnostics (CLIA‑validated); the assay is not FDA‑cleared.
