Consultation, Surgical Pathology
Also known as: SP CONSULT
Use
This service provides surgical pathology consultation and second‐opinion interpretation of submitted tissue specimens (e.g., stained slides, blocks, and surgical pathology report) by ARUP pathologists across a broad range of subspecialty areas. It supports diagnostic clarification or additional expertise in complex cases.
Special Instructions
Appropriate stains and ancillary testing (e.g., immunostains, molecular studies) may be performed and charged separately at the reviewing pathologist’s discretion. Ancillary testing requested by the referring physician may not be performed if deemed unnecessary. Submit via electronic request or using ARUP Anatomic Pathology Form #32960 if needed.
Limitations
This consultative service requires submission of fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue; wet tissue, non‑representative tissue types, or depleted specimens are unacceptable. Cases may vary in content and requested ancillary tests, and the nature and extent of interpretive data and ancillary testing is variable — see report. No guaranteed uniform processes for stains or molecular work — ordered at pathologist discretion.
