Kell K/k (KEL) Antigen Genotyping, Fetal
Also known as: KELGENO FE
Use
The Kell K/k (KEL) Antigen Genotyping, Fetal test is used to assess the risk of alloimmune hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) by determining the fetal Kell genotype. K antigen is a frequent cause of HDFN and is crucial in erythrocyte alloimmunization, which can lead to hemolytic transfusion reactions or HDFN. Identifying the fetal genotype can help in clinical management and predicting risk in cases where the pregnant patient is sensitized to the big K antigen.
Special Instructions
Informed consent for genetic testing is required for New York patients. For questions, ARUP Genetics Processing can be contacted at 800-522-2787 ext. 3301. If the client cannot culture, the test Cytogenetics Grow and Send (ARUP test code 0040182) should be ordered in addition.
Limitations
The test may not detect rare nucleotide changes leading to altered or partial antigen expression and null phenotypes. Bloody amniotic fluid samples may result in false-negative outcomes due to maternal cell contamination. Patients who have undergone hematopoietic stem cell transplants might have inconclusive results. The performance of this test has not been cleared or approved by the FDA, and abnormal signal intensities may lead to indeterminate genotyping results.
