S-100 Protein by Immunohistochemistry (DAB Detection)
Also known as: S100 IHC
Use
This test provides a technical service-only immunohistochemical stain (DAB detection) for the S‑100 protein, a marker commonly expressed in Schwann cells, melanocytes, chondrocytes, neural tumors, Langerhans cells, and some carcinomas (e.g., breast). It aids in the identification and characterization of such neoplasms through tissue-specific S‑100 expression patterns.
Special Instructions
Submit electronically or use ARUP Immunohistochemistry Stain Form (#32978) if no electronic ordering capability; requires ARUP client number. Transport tissue block or at least 2 positively charged slides (3–5 µm sections) without oven baking; formalin fixation and paraffin embedding required. Ship in cooled container during summer months.
Limitations
This is a stain‑and‑return (technical component only) service; no pathologist interpretation is provided. The test cannot be used to order components directly. Frozen or improperly fixed tissues are unacceptable; depleted or non‑representative specimens are unacceptable. Slides must avoid excessive heat and be freshly cut.
