Allergen Profile, Birch Pollen Related
Use
The Allergen Profile, Birch Pollen Related test is useful in diagnosing patients with oral allergy syndrome (OAS), also known as pollen-food allergy syndrome. This test helps to identify and manage allergies to birch pollen and cross-reactive food allergens, such as apple, carrot, hazelnut, potato, pear, plum, peach, cherry, and apricot. OAS is a self-limiting condition with localized symptoms in the mouth and throat. Identifying these allergens is crucial for differentiating OAS from more severe systemic allergic reactions.
Special Instructions
Patients with an allergy to birch pollen may exhibit cross-reactivity to certain foods, leading to oral allergy syndrome. Symptoms include itching and hives confined to the mouth and throat upon ingestion of triggering foods. Differentiating OAS from systemic allergic reactions is important.
Limitations
The test is specific to identifying IgE-mediated reactions and may not detect non-IgE mediated responses. Cross-reactivity with allergens not tested in the panel could lead to false negatives. The test does not provide a comprehensive evaluation of all possible allergens and should be used as part of a broader diagnostic workup for allergic conditions.
