Herring
Use
This test is used to detect and quantify specific IgE antibodies to herring in a patient's serum. The presence of these antibodies can indicate an allergic response to herring, which may cause symptoms such as hives, swelling, or anaphylaxis in susceptible individuals. Measuring specific IgE levels may aid in the diagnosis of food allergy and help guide decisions around dietary restrictions and management of allergic reactions.
Special Instructions
Ensure to use a red-top tube or a gel-barrier tube for specimen collection. Volume required is 0.2 mL of serum. Samples should be handled and stored following specified temperature stability instructions to maintain sample integrity.
Limitations
This test detects specific IgE antibodies to herring; however, it is not capable of diagnosing clinical sensitivity or allergy on its own. Test results must be interpreted in conjunction with the patient's clinical history and other diagnostic findings. Cross-reactivity with other fish species can occur, potentially leading to false-positive results. The test does not determine the severity of an allergic reaction.
