Immunoglobulin A, Quantitative
Also known as: IgA, Serum, Quantitative IgA, Serum
Use
Evaluate humoral immunity; monitor therapy in IgA myeloma
Special Instructions
Indicate the patient's age on the test request form to ensure proper interpretation of results. Be mindful of temperature handling for samples suspected of containing macroglobulins or cryoglobulins to prevent false low values.
Limitations
False low values may occur if samples containing macroglobulins, cryoglobulins, or cold agglutinins are handled at incorrect temperatures. IgA values can also be influenced by exercise, which may elevate levels, and pregnancy, which may lower them. Patients with IgA deficiency and antibodies against IgA may experience anaphylaxis if transfused.
