Smooth Muscle Actin (SMA) by Immunohistochemistry
Also known as: SMA IHC
Use
This immunohistochemistry stain (Smooth Muscle Actin, SMA) is used as a technical 'stain and return' diagnostic service to detect smooth muscle actin expression in tissue or cells, aiding in histopathologic evaluation. It is performed in a clinical laboratory setting as a Laboratory Developed Test (LDT).
Special Instructions
Ordering requires submission by electronic request or use of ARUP Immunohistochemistry Stain Form (#32978) with ARUP client number. A tissue transport kit (ARUP supply #47808) is required for transport of tissue blocks or slides. Precise collection, slide preparation (min 2 slides, 3–5 μm thick, positively charged), and transport instructions are specified; avoid oven baking precut slides.
Limitations
Specimens unacceptable if non-representative tissue type or depleted. Slides must not be oven baked. Frozen specimens are unacceptable. Specimens must be formalin-fixed (10% neutral buffered) and paraffin-embedded. Frozen specimens cannot be used.
