Special Stain, Fontana-Masson
Also known as: FONTANA SS
Use
The Special Stain, Fontana-Masson is primarily used for the detection of argentaffin substances, such as melanin and other related pigments. It is an important tool in histopathology for identifying conditions characterized by the presence of these pigments. This test is essential for differentiating melanin from other pigments in tissue samples, which is crucial for accurate diagnosis in dermatopathology and other specialized fields of pathology.
Special Instructions
The use of the ARUP Anatomic Pathology Test Request Form (#32960) is recommended for ordering this test. Samples must be prepared in formalin and paraffin embedded for accurate staining. Ensure specimens are not exposed to excessive heat during transportation. Submit electronic requests if possible, or use the ARUP client number to facilitate processing. Contact ARUP Client Services for technical details.
Limitations
This test is primarily a technical service, and results depend on the quality and representativeness of the specimen submitted. Specimens with non-representative tissue types or depleted samples are considered unacceptable and will lead to possible rejection. Accurate interpretation requires consideration of clinical history and other diagnostic tests. The stability of the specimen is indefinitely assured in ambient and refrigerated conditions, but frozen specimens are unacceptable.
