Oncology FISH Analysis - RET Rearrangement
Use
Oncology FISH Analysis – RET Rearrangement is a Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH) test designed to detect a common chromosomal rearrangement associated with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). NSCLC is the most common type of lung cancer and often presents with coughing, fatigue, and other symptoms that may be mistaken for common illnesses. RET gene rearrangement has been identified in 1-2% of NSCLC cases. Results of this test must always be interpreted in the context of relevant clinical and pathological data and should not be used alone for a diagnosis of non-small cell lung cancer.
Special Instructions
Specimens undergoing FISH testing must be preserved in 10% neutral buffered formalin for a minimum of 6 hours and no longer than 48 hours to ensure accurate results. The volume of formalin should be at least ten times that of the specimen to promote proper fixation. It's crucial to avoid using strong acid decalcification solutions, as such practices can compromise test accuracy. Samples fixed for either less than the minimum or exceeding the maximum fixation time may yield false negative results, thereby impacting diagnosis and treatment decisions.
Limitations
This FISH assay tests for rearrangements involving the RET loci. Other abnormalities involving this gene cannot be identified with this assay.
