Estrogens, Total
Use
Evaluate for ovarian estrogen producing tumor in the premenarcheal and postmenopausal female; evaluate estrogen excess in males. Estrogen analysis may be helpful in establishing time of ovulation and optimal time for conception. Serial samples must be collected over several days to evaluate baseline and peak total estrogen levels.
Special Instructions
Serial samples must be collected over several days to evaluate baseline and peak total estrogen levels. If a red-top tube or any other tube besides a gel-barrier tube is used, it is essential to transfer the separated serum to a plastic transport tube for safe handling.
Limitations
Test results can be affected by gross hemolysis, lipemia, and icteric specimens, which may lead to incorrect assessments of estrogen levels. The volume requirements specify that 0.5 mL of serum is the minimum, which may not allow for repeat testing if necessary.
