Ehrlichia chaffeensis Antibodies (IgG, IgM)
Use
Human Monocytic Ehrlichiosis (HME) is a tick‑borne infection caused by Ehrlichia chaffeensis. Infections range in severity from asymptomatic to life‑threatening, especially in immunocompromised patients. This serologic assay (IFA) detects IgG and IgM antibodies to aid in the diagnosis of ehrlichiosis, recognizing that early acute illness may show negative titers and paired serologic testing may be warranted for confirmation.
Special Instructions
Not provided.
Limitations
Negative results may occur in the first week of illness; single acute titers are insufficient to confirm infection—paired acute and convalescent sera (2‑10 weeks apart) are recommended. IgM is not a reliable indicator of recent infection and remains elevated for months, limiting specificity. Cross‑reactivity and persistence of antibodies may confound interpretation.
