Food and Tree Nut Allergy Panel with Reflex to Components
Also known as: Tree Nut Food Allergy, ImmunoCAP®
Use
This panel measures immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies in the blood in response to a variety of food and tree nut allergens. Reflex testing is performed to identify specific allergenic proteins when whole allergen IgE results are elevated, enabling improved discrimination between true allergy and sensitization, informing severity risk, and helping optimize personalized diagnosis and management.
Special Instructions
Reflex testing is triggered when IgE levels for egg white, cow’s milk, peanut, Brazil nut, walnut, cashew, or hazelnut meet or exceed 0.10 kU/L. Additional component panels (e.g., Peanut Component Panel, Egg Component Panel, Milk Component Panel, Brazil Nut Component, Walnut Component Panel, Cashew Nut Component Panel, Hazelnut Component Panel) are run automatically on the same sample at additional charge using CPT code(s): 86008 multiple units depending on the allergen.
Limitations
A positive test indicates sensitization (IgE antibodies) but does not confirm clinical allergy or predict severity by itself; results should be interpreted in conjunction with clinical history and other diagnostic modalities. Negative IgE results do not rule out allergy, and cross-reactivity may occur. Limitations of analytic sensitivity and thresholds (≥0.10 kU/L) may affect reflex performance.
