Allergens, Food, Nuts
Also known as: MIXEDNUTS
Use
This test is used to measure allergen-specific IgE concentrations to a variety of nuts including peanut, walnut/black walnut, chestnut, hazelnut, pecan, cashew, brazil nut, and almond. It aids in the diagnosis and management of allergic responses to these specific foods. The results help to assess the probability of IgE-mediated clinical reactions and are useful in conjunction with clinical history and other allergy testing such as skin tests.
Special Instructions
Ensure adequate volume for allergen testing by using a serum separator tube. Multiple patient encounters and specimen tubes should be avoided. It is important to separate serum from cells as soon as possible or within 2 hours of collection. The transport tube should contain 0.95 mL of serum at a minimum volume of 0.52 mL.
Limitations
While results provide ranges indicating increasing concentrations of allergen-specific IgE, these may not directly correlate with the degree of clinical response or skin test results when the patient is exposed to a specific allergen. A negative test result does not rule out clinical allergy or anaphylaxis. The relevance of allergen results ranging from 0.10-0.34 kU/L is uncertain and should be evaluated by a specialist. Always correlate laboratory results with clinical history and in vivo reactivity.
