Cortisol by LC-MS/MS, Salivary
Also known as: CORT S TMS
Use
This test is used to rule out Cushing syndrome or to screen for thymic and bronchial carcinoid tumors. It is a salivary cortisol test which is particularly relevant in the assessment of adrenal hyperfunction, particularly for diagnostics relating to Cushing Syndrome where salivary cortisol measurements can provide an indication of circadian rhythm and adrenal output.
Special Instructions
Recommended collection time for the specimen is generally between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m., although your healthcare provider may require different or additional collection times. It is important to clearly label each collection tube with the correct date and time. Avoid eating, consuming alcohol, using toothpaste, mouthwash, or lip products prior to collection to prevent contamination which could result in falsely elevated cortisol levels.
Limitations
Specimens not collected using the Salivette collection device are unacceptable. During collection, contamination with exogenous cortisol sources or substances like blood, food particles, or cellular debris must be avoided as they may interfere with the test results. It's important to follow proper collection and storage protocols to ensure the stability and integrity of the specimen for accurate analysis.
