Muc-4 by Immunohistochemistry
Also known as: MUC4 IHC
Use
The Muc-4 by Immunohistochemistry test is intended for the staining and analysis of tissue samples to detect the presence of the MUC4 protein. MUC4 is a membrane-associated mucin that is expressed in various epithelial cancers and may be involved in cancer progression and metastasis. This test aids clinicians in identifying MUC4 expression patterns in tissue specimens, providing insights into the diagnosis and potential prognosis of certain cancers. It is specifically used within a clinical context to guide pathology evaluations.
Special Instructions
This test is performed as a stain and return (technical) service only. It requires an electronic request submission. If electronic ordering is not feasible, an ARUP Immunohistochemistry Stain Form (#32978) should be used along with an ARUP client number. ARUP supplies the tissue transport kit, which is ordered via ARUP Connect™ or by contacting ARUP Client Services. Submission must include electronic requests or the proper form filled out with an ARUP client number.
Limitations
The test has not been cleared or approved by the FDA but is performed in a CLIA certified laboratory intended for clinical purposes. While it provides information on MUC4 protein presence, it does not diagnose cancer nor indicate other conditions independently. The interpretation of results should be conducted by a qualified pathologist within the broader clinical context. Tissue samples must be formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded; non-representative tissue types and depleted specimens will be rejected.
