Estradiol, Sensitive, LC/MS
Also known as: E2
Use
Recommended for clinical situations in which increased sensitivity of E2 levels is appropriate, including postmenopausal women, men, and children and adolescents
Special Instructions
Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS-MS) provides increased sensitivity and specificity, a larger dynamic range than immunoassays, and is preferred for low serum estradiol measurement in various clinical scenarios.
Limitations
Estradiol levels vary significantly, especially during the perimenopausal transition. There is a significant overlap between menopausal women and values observed during normal menstrual cycles, making it essential to use one consistent assay method for monitoring serial patient results. Estradiol levels obtained with different assay methods are not interchangeable, and sensitivity may be insufficient to detect low levels accurately with standard immunoassays, necessitating the use of LC/MS-MS in low concentration scenarios.
